Our Vision, Our Culture, Our School

by | May 20, 2021 | Christian Education, Principal's Desk, School Culture

The dictionary defines “School Culture” as the guiding beliefs and values evident in the way a school operates. If you were asked to define the school culture of your child’s current school, what would you say? Is it a question you ask yourself? What would your child say?

In education, the culture of the school is incredibly important. It sets the tone for everything that happens inside of its walls. School culture is sometimes referred to as “Hidden Curriculum” due to the fact that it is incredibly important but very rarely discussed or addressed. You should feel culture as soon as you enter a school building. You should almost be able to feel what is going on. Are kids excited, friendly and respectful? Are teachers creative, upbeat and positive? Is learning valued?

Academic learning absolutely occurs in the classroom but much of kids’ learning occurs implicitly. I believe that kids will rise to the standard that is set before them. You set the stage for what you want your culture to look like and then the hard work begins. Are kids held to high standards? In a Christian School that standard is not only academically, but personally. Are you walking out your faith daily? Are ethics important?

There are some recognized keys to creating a positive school culture:

  • Attending to mission and values in and outside of the classroom
  • Engaged Staff, Engaged Students
  • A Commitment to Lifelong Learning
  • A Sense of Personal Ownership and Responsibility

The beautiful thing about our new school, Riverstone United Christian Academy, is that the above expectations will be embedded into our very fiber. As described by Sir Kenneth Robinson “Students are seeds planted and it is our task to provide the environment that will allow them to grow and flourish into all they are destined to be.” Quality young men and women, academically prepared and mature in their faith, ready for the stage set before them. Our Vision, Our Culture, Our School.
